The purpose of The Advanced Placement Program is to help highly motivated students in 11th and 12th grade prepare for college. In addition to experiencing a college paced class, it also gives students a chance to earn college credit during their high school years. Students will be expected to complete the requirements set forth by the AP College Board. This can be accomplished by creating an art portfolio that demonstrates understanding and mastering of various artistic technique and processes.
There are THREE types of Portfolios:
2D Design
Drawing
3D Design
Each portfolio consists of a quality, breadth and concentration portion.
SECTION I:
Breadth 12 images of 12 different works; one image of each is submitted
SECTION II:
Concentration 12 images; some may be details
SECTION III:
Quality Five actual drawings; maximum size is 18" x 24"
The class will be taught with the purpose of creating a studio experience in which the student can complete the 2D Design, Drawing or 3D section of the AP Portfolio. Students can expect to complete the breadth, and concentration portions of the portfolio with dedication to in-class time, and working at home. It is extremely important to follow the deadlines provided in order to complete the work in a timely manner.
Student Responsibilities
For every breadth assignment given, students will have two weeks to finish the assignment. Students can expect a new assignment every week, given on a Monday or Tuesday respectively. This means that at any given time students will be working on two assignments. It cannot be overstated how important deadlines are in the AP Studio Class. It is expected that you spend 9 hours a week working outside of class. Please be aware of this.
Students whose work is NOT submitted at the beginning of class on Thursday/Friday will lose grade points on the final piece and NO BAKED GOODS!.
Students should be prepared for the deadlines, and accept the consequences if they are not met. It is never acceptable to submit sketches or unfinished work as a final grade, and credit will not be given to students who submit such work, even if it is turned-in in a timely manner. It is extremely important that the student uses their time wisely in class. Ms Giese will be reviewing efforts in class, in addition to sketchbook reflection, development and writing assignments.
Every Thursday or Friday, respectively, students will partake in a class critique. All work should be completed and students should participate in the overall critique.
In addition you are required to participate the Scholastic Art Awards. You are to submit one quality piece of work to Scholastic during the month of November. Each additional contest you enter will be counted as extra credit.
Artistic Integrity
Students must always do their own work, and are not allowed to copy from someone else work, this is considered plagiarism. If students choose to use photographs or other artistic works, for reference, enough modification must be made to it to constitute a complete new work
The AP Portfolio Consists of:
Sections I: QUALITY – Five Original works demonstrating mastery of design in concept, composition and execution
Section II: CONCENTRATION – 12 works Students will develop a series of art works based on a visual idea or problem.
Section III: BREADTH – 12 works (No details) Students will be expected to create works of art in their own personal artistic voice, that relate to the basic elements and principles of art.
