The Bliss Lists
Andrew D. Watson 2011
Fill out the lists with the first things that come to your mind. There is no right or wrong answers. It is okay to have a few blanks, but try to fill most of them in. Take it seriously and keep it school appropriate, but remember you don’t have to let anyone read it.

Okay, now that you are finished we are going to try to make some connections.
1. Go to the list of 10 things you like to think about and underline the answer that means the most to you.
2. Go through all the other lists and underline any answer that is somehow related to it (the one you underline from your 10 things you like to think about list).
3. Now, go to the list of 10 things that make you feel and circle an answer that isn’t already underlined that has meaning to you.
4. Go through all the other lists and circle any answer that is somehow related to the one you just circled. It’s okay to circle it, if it is already underlined.
5. Now pick one list from the 10 things you like to do, read, watch, and listen to.
6. Star the thing that is most meaningful to you on each list.
7. Go through all the lists and box any answer that is somehow related to you.
8. Take a pink highlighter/marker and mark the most interesting or surprising word on the page.
9. Use a yellow highlighter/marker to mark anything that is related to the one highlighted in pink.
Now, we review the pattern(s).
1. Look for the answer or answers that have been most marked.
2. If you had to categorize or paraphrase them, how would you describe them?

3. Are there answers that you marked that bore you? If so, scribble them out.
4. Are there answers that you didn’t mark, but you really want to make art about? If so, mark them with a green highlighter/marker.
5. Review your list and the answers on this sheet. What common theme unifies all or most of your answers? List your answer below.

The theme you listed above will be what you will base all of your student directed projects. You will need to brainstorm off of this theme each time or add to your first brainstorm (a minimum of 20 ideas is required on the brainstorm). you will then need to create at least 3 sketches based off of your brainstorm list each time. Do not go for the obvious/low level ideas, they will not be accepted. Copyrighted designs will also not be accepted.
