Negative spaces
Look at the spaces between the stools. You can draw the entire stool using only the shapes that define it.
Draw these stools using only shape. Color in the the negative spaces.
Magazine Negative Space
- Look through the magazines and find a picture with interesting negative space.
- (It must be an enclosed space, You may need to draw a box around the object to find the shape.)
- Color the shape in on the magazine
- Draw the shape in your sketchbook and color in
Finding Negative Shape
- Using this image, trace the negative space onto a clean piece of paper
- Color in the negative space
Viewfinder Plant
- Using the plants at the front of the room
- Arrange in a pleasing still life situation
- Using your view finder trace the negative spaces
- Draw a rectangle corresponding to the rectangle on your view finder
- Carefully draw the negative space on your paper
- Color in the negative space, leaving the plant white
Quantity or Quality
You will be showing what you understand about negative spaces and how to translate what you see into a drawing.
You have a choice.
A. You can do a series of 20 quick sketches from around the room. Focusing on the negative space and relationships found in your everyday world.
B. You can create 1 highly indepth and focused drawing. Show the negative space and your understanding of space in a composition.

Printing
1. Choose a leaf and place it in front of you
2. Using your ipad take a photo of the leaf
3. Crop, adjust the photo to be square and to touch the edges of the leaf creating at least 4 individual negative spaces. (if you need a challenge create more)
4. On a 4x4 piece of cardboard draw the leaf with pencil using the negative shapes
5. Take a piece of craft foam and place it over the top of your drawing. Burnish the top of the foam to transfer the leaf design
6. Cut out the negative shapes from the foam and save
7. Glue the shapes onto the cardboard in their correct place
8. Roll ink over the printing plate
9. Print
